It’s that time of year again where people make their resolutions, and many of those involve leading a healthier lifestyle.
If one of your resolutions this year is to get healthy or lose weight, then you’ve probably considered joining a gym to help you out with this. Starting a new routine, much less one where you go to the gym, can be hard.
That’s why we are going to be covering some basic terminology and things to know when starting a new gym routine.
One of the scariest things of starting a gym routine is not knowing any of the gym equipment. When you’re new to the gym, it can be intimidating looking at all the different machines and weights and wondering, “Where do I start?”.
First of all, make sure you bring the right equipment to the gym with you. Essential items that you should bring to the gym include a good pair of headphones, a lock, your gym pass, water bottle, towel, and of course a killer playlist to keep you motivated.
If you’re not sure what exercises to start with, something that can help with that is finding a class at the gym that offers either circuit training or weight training. These classes can help you get familiar with both free weights and machines, and feel more comfortable using them with proper form.
The infographic below illustrates some basic exercises, but if you are new to doing them work with your gym to find a personal trainer to check your form. Don’t be afraid to venture out from just using the treadmill, and if you are using a treadmill, don’t feel like you have to run on it. Walking is okay, too!
We know that everyone sets resolutions to be healthier and that the gym will be packed the beginning of the year. Keep in mind that everyone used to be where you’re at now, and don’t be discouraged!
