Although I have a home gym, I also have outdoor exercise equipment to work out outside. I have a calisthenics station on which I do bodyweight exercises and some portable stuff like a jumping rope.
To tell the truth, I love training outside. I’m in the fresh air, and I have a workout experience that cannot be compared to the comfortable gym. I use my outdoor gym almost all time of the year, even in cold weather.
Before showing you some beneficial outdoor workout equipment, here are a few tips.
- If you buy outdoor fitness machines which are too heavy to move, pay attention that they must be weather resistant. The painting must give UV and water protection. And, it is not bad if you also use a canvas for extra protection. Finally, you need an area which is flat, so the equipment will not wobble.
- Also, you can choose from a wide range of portable equipment that you can quickly use.
I will show you both types below.
- Outdoor Gym Equipment for Strength Training
- Outdoor Fitness Equipment for Cardio
Outdoor Gym Equipment for Strength Training
1. Power Tower – For Bodyweight Training
Lifting weight is not the only way to build muscles, bodyweight training is as efficient. It is even a more natural way to exercise. That is what I mainly do.
The most beneficial bodyweight moves are pull ups, chin ups, push ups, dips, squats and their variations. So, you need something to perform these moves.
The power tower, or pull up dip station, is compact calisthenics equipment with multiple stations. Hence, you can do all the mentioned exercises.
The Stamina 65-1460 Outdoor Fitness Power Tower is the one I recommend. It withstands the outdoor elements. There is no complain about rust or peeling.
Compared to indoor towers, it is a commercial heavy-duty piece supporting up to 300 lb load. Some trainers even use it for doing muscles ups.
It comes with a pull-up, dip, push up and sit ups stations. This way you can have a total upper body strength training outside. Keep in mind, it weighs 88 pounds, so it is not easy to relocate. I think, it is the best buy among outdoor workout stations.
2. Stamina Outdoor Outdoor Workout Station
Another outdoor fitness station made for bodyweight training, but it does not have a pull-up bar. From the same manufacturer as the previous item with identical weather protection. No complaints about rust (someone has it outside for 4 years without any problem.)
It has regular and inclined push-up bars, inverted bodyweight row bars, and a dip station with parallel bars. Hence, you can strengthen your entire upper body.
Customers like it for its stability. You can even easily bolt it down since the holes already added to make it even more sturdy.
3. Stamina Outdoor Exercise Bench
This weight bench is protected as the two previous one. It does not look like a traditional indoor bench. Since it does not have a padded backrest, which would not stand the outdoor conditions, lying on it is not as comfortable while doing, for example, dumbbell bench presses. However, you can use a mat to make it comfier.
It is heavy-duty steel construction with 300 lb maximum capacity. It can also be used as a sit up bench.
Without a doubt, it is a versatile piece that you can use for strength training for such dumbbell exercises like flies, sitting biceps curls, dumbbell rows, etc. Or for bodyweight moves like decline push-ups, lunges or single leg squats, etc.
4. Portable Pull Up & Dip Bar – Use it everywhere
I know the developers of this outside workout equipment from Germany. I have already written a detailed review about this portable pull up and dip bar here.
The fantastic advantage of this product that can be fixed almost everywhere thanks to the unique strap system it comes with. You can easily mount and demount it for example on a tree trunk or on a vertical steel bar. But, you can also install it on a wall.
Lightweight and comes with a bag so that you can take it wherever you want.
It provides an excellent workout experience, heavy-duty supporting 300 lb and versatile. You can buy from various packages. Although, it is a bit pricey.
5. Suspension Trainer – Portable & easy installation
The suspension trainer is one of the most versatile items for total body workouts. And, since it is lightweight and effortless to install, it is excellent outdoor fitness equipment as well. It would be hard to list the number of bodyweight exercises you can do with it.
TRX is the most well-known product, but there cheaper alternatives giving the same experience.
6. Adjustable dumbbells – For lifting weights
I prefer adjustable dumbbells since they combine multiple weights into one, plus they come with a tray for easy storage. When I want to work out outdoor, I just take a pair, and ready to train with various loads.
Modern dumbbell sets come with systems such as dialing which let us change the weight quickly without changing weight plates manually. Bowflex and Powerblock are the two most reliable pieces.
Others for building muscles?
I have to mention push up bars that let us improve the length of the motion leading to more effective muscles development. Plus, they are small exercise equipment.
Outdoor Fitness Equipment for Cardio
7. Agility ladder – The exciting cardio
A simple tool but let us have fat burning and a somewhat exciting activity. You can choose from many agility ladder drills and combine everything. Such training also develops your foot speed, coordination, quickness, and body awareness. You can quickly pack it up after usage.
8. Jump Rope – Quick fat burner
Skipping rope is the main cardio I do. It boosts endurance, coordination, balance, speed and excellent workout to burn fat. Plus, cheap and fit in our pocket.
9. Battle Rope
There are a lot of battle rope exercises, and each of them gives a total body workout. These moves are particularly beneficial for the core.
This type of activitity is a sort of combination of cardio and strength training. Hence, besides strengthening your muscles, you can burn fat and develop your endurance and cardio. All in one!
How to build an outdoor workout park?
Well, unfortunately, I’m awful at DIY stuff. I had my outside workout station built by my friend. But, here is a video on how to build an outdoor calisthenics gym from wood. There are a lot of DIY tutorials on Youtube for outdoor fitness park ideas.
Final thoughts on outdoor exercise equipment
If you have spent thousands of hours in an indoor gym, working out outdoor will give you an entirely new experience, in a positive way. If you have a small backyard or a garden, get out and try it.
